Muddy meets the Devon dweller who’s changing the story of women’s equestrian wear
You’ll probably find Amanda Dowie somewhere in rural Devon – most likely on the epic wild moors, walking her Labrador, spending time with her horses or tucked up next to an open fire in a country pub. It’s this lifestyle that sparked her to create a fabulous clothing brand, Georgian Dollar.
The signature ‘Sieta’ equestrian jeans were born – combining durability, practicality and an outfit that she could wear all day. Because sometimes, we want to look and feel great, in the saddle, in the pub – and everywhere else, right?
Tell us a bit about yourself? Where you live in Devon?
I live near Tavistock, Dartmoor, close to my two gorgeous horses. Before Georgian Dollar, I worked in recruitment and ran my own executive search company. I lived in Dubai, along with my family and horses – and had an idea about creating my own design of riding jeans. Four years later, back in Devon, Georgian Dollar was born. The brand was named after my daughter’s beloved pony, and the Sieta jeans named after my horse, Macho (full name, Sieta Machos!)
What’s your perfect Devon day when you’re not working?
A long walk on Dartmoor with my black Labrador, Maggie, a pootle around Tavistock, then a trip to the coast. My favourite Pub is The Cornish Arms in Tavistock or Who’d Have Thought It in Milton Combe – where I had my first legal drink at 18! I’m always in my Sieta jeans and my battered Dubarry boots.
What inspired you to create equestrian jeans?
Equestrians are some of the most inspiring and dedicated people around and they deserve amazing clothes that are fit for purpose.
Our Sieta Equestrian Jeans are designed to fit like a glove. They’re super-soft, comfortable and practical, whether you’re hacking out, mucking out, heading to the high street or meeting friends at the pub – which is, of course, a crucial part of Devon life.
And are Georgian Dollar jeans great for those that don’t ride?
Absolutely! They are designed for every day life, not just for riding, so if you are active or outdoorsy and want durable jeans that fit and look amazing, these are perfect. The discrete grip feature gives a beautiful equestrian feel and adds another level of practicality.
Tell us about the journey to creating the perfect riding jean – and what makes them so special?
I searched far and wide to source the softest, highest-quality materials and worked tirelessly to create a design that feels every bit as good as it looks.
Georgian Dollar was built with this vision in mind, meaning you can wear one pair of jeans for a whole day in the countryside – and beyond. They’ll look as good in a city bar as they do in the stable.
Where in Devon will you be wearing your jeans, other than in the saddle?
On a gorgeous day out in Lydford – one of my favourite villages. Lunch at The Dartmoor Inn and then a hearty walk, followed by a drink in The Castle Inn. A slow drive home enjoying the wild ponies, roaming sheep and far reaching views.
Devon and riding just seem to fit perfectly, don’t they?
Horses are a huge part of our culture in Devon. From the wild, beautiful ponies of Dartmoor to the endless private fields and liveries. Even if you don’t ride, it’s easy to enjoy them and understand how they are part of our heritage, our culture and our future.
Where’s your favourite place to ride in Devon?
The best rides come from where you and your horse feel safe and at one with each other. The iconic sands of Mothecombe are enjoyed by many, as are the quiet lanes and bridleways of Mid Devon – every ride is special.
Dartmoor, of course, is epic – and it’s my home, so I’d have to choose that as my favourite.
What’s the most Devon thing about you?
My deeply engrained love for Dartmoor. Here in Devon we become part of the landscape and my connection with Dartmoor runs wonderfully deep. I grew up on Dartmoor, hearing stories from my grandfather of the monsters of the moor! Every road I drive sparks beautiful memories.
